Egypt attaches great attention to joint strategic projects in Sudan: Irrigation minister

The political leadership in Egypt pays significant attention to executing joint strategic projects in Sudan, including joint power grid projects as well as joint roads and rails development projects, Minister Water Resources and Irrigation Hani Sewilam said.

Egypt is also making every possible effort to support Sudanese people and provide them with medical and relief aid, if needed, Sewilam added during a meeting with President of the Transitional Sovereign Council of Sudan Abdel-Fattah Al-Burhan here on Sunday.

Commending the deeply rooted ties binding both countries, Sewilam asserted Egypt’s interest in pushing cooperation forward in all domains, especially irrigation and water resources, to realize the aspirations of the Egyptian and Sudanese peoples.

Sewilam also reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to the 1959 Nile Waters Agreement as a basis for technical cooperation through the permanent joint Technical Authority for Nile water, established in 1960.

The authority is specialized in conducting research and studies to optimize the management of the Nile water resource. It also ensures integrated coordination and cooperation in exchanging data and measurements to assist in the hydrological studies of the Nile.

Sewilam emphasized the importance of holding the authority’s meetings on a regular basis to discuss joint technical issues of mutual interests.

Meanwhile, Burhan underscored his country’s commitment to constant cooperation and coordination at the highest levels, while ironing out any hinnders facing the regular convention of the joint technical authority.

The Sudanese irrigation minister and the Egyptian ambassador in Khartoum also attended the meeting.

Sewilam is on a two-day visit to Sudan, the first official trip to a riparian state since he assumed office as minister of water resources and irrigation.
