Marking Lebanon’s 77th Independence Day, Caretaker Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defense Zeina Akar, delivered a speech on Saturday, deeming it a day that “embodies important milestones in the history of our country,” and stressing the need to “fortify national unity with more wisdom, vigilance and high readiness, and to sacrifice for Lebanon’s sake during the current critical circumstances.”
“Today we celebrate the 77th anniversary of Independence Day amidst many challenges that we are experiencing in Lebanon, especially after August 4 – the date of the tragic Beirut Port explosion, and the Corona epidemic outbreak, which made it impossible to mark this day in celebration as before,” Akar said.
“All of us, citizens, officials and responsible figures, of all sects and political affiliations, have to cooperate in solidarity to confront the dangers that threaten us at all levels, especially the economic, health and educational levels,” she added.
“On Independence Day, we turn to the army, commanders, officers, soldiers and individuals, with a salute of honor and reverence, for the military institution is one of the main pillars, and it has proven in more than one junction that it is up to the responsibility it shoulders, in defending and preserving Lebanon, its security and stability, especially since Lebanon is currently fighting the battle to defend the land and rights, in negotiations to demarcate the maritime borders, and in light of the daily and repeated Israeli violations,” the Caretaker Defense Minister went on.
Addressing all Lebanese, Akar congratulated them on this historical day, confirming “ongoing efforts to uphold the interest of Lebanon above all considerations, preserve the sovereignty of the country and the citizen’s dignity, protect civil peace, and defend Lebanon’s land, people and institutions.”
