MUSCAT: The 16th Edition of the SQU Career and Training Opportunities Fair (2015), organised by the Centre for Career Guidance at Sultan Qaboos University, commenced on Tuesday under the patronage of Abdullah bin Nasser Al Bakri, Minister of Manpower. As many as 60 prospective employers, both from the public and private sectors, are participating in the three-day career fair. The Minister of Manpower, congratulated SQU for organising the career fair on a big scale attracting great participation of employers and job-seekers. He extended all support from the ministry to this endeavour.
The Career Fair aims to provide jobs and training opportunities for SQU students and graduates in order to enhance their abilities, develop their skills and prepare them for the labour market. The Fair is considered to be an excellent opportunity for students who are in the stage of choosing their academic specialisations to be exposed to the ones most in demand in the Omani labour market and the career paths associated with them. The fair, also, helps the participating institutions to accelerate their Omanisation programme through direct contact with more than 3,000 graduates with diverse educational backgrounds.
264993The ongoing fair is expected to attract around 15,000 visitors from all over Oman. The total number of vacancies reported by the participating employers is 1,647. The number of training opportunities this year is 1,006. According to information from the Centre for Career Guidance at SQU, all participating organisations are carefully chosen according to certain criteria such as the availability of outstanding quality and quantity of offered jobs and training opportunities.
This year, the Fair is gaining special attention due to the presence of the Entrepreneurship Corner which seeks to encourage Omani youth to start their own businesses and be self-employed.
The event is accompanied by lectures and talks on topics related to job search such as skills required for workplace, preparing for interviews, and so on. The booklet containing relevant information about the Career Fair is distributed by the organisers.
The Fair will continue till March 12. On Wednesday only females will be allowed to visit the job fair from 2 pm to 5 pm.
