FREE AI LEARNING APPLICATION ALLOWS PUBLIC SCHOOL STUDENTS ACROSS LEBANON TO CONTINUE THEIR EDUCATION

Following the Lebanese government’s decision to close public and private institutions in response to the COVID-19 outbreak, the Minister of Education and Higher Education Dr. Tarek Majzoub published on March 17, 2020 the circular n0 15. This circular aimed to orchestrate in details the three different pathways that MEHE will be following for distance learning, having at their core online learning and teaching.

 

In addition to existing provision, thousands of schools and millions of families in Lebanon are being offered free use of a world-leading artificial intelligence learning platform to help children to learn while schools are closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

 

In collaboration with the Lebanese Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MEHE), and with the support of the UK government’s Department for International Development, public schools and families will receive free logins to CENTURY, which allows students to study with the help of an AI-powered learning engine.

 

With schools in Lebanon closed until at least September, CENTURY is stepping in to help children to continue to access world-class curriculum aligned resources and learn from home with the help of AI. CENTURY will initially be launched in 600 schools and in the coming weeks will be made available to all five thousand plus public schools across Lebanon. This access includes content covering English, Science (including Biology, Physics and Chemistry) and Maths for children aged between 7-16 years old.

 

Lebanese Minister of Education and Higher Education, Tarek Majzoub, said: “Our aim at MEHE is to ensure quality education for ALL children in Lebanon. Despite the prevailing health situation, our teams were doing their best to ensure that online learning is provided in the most suitable way for as many children as possible. This involved training the teachers and school staff on using the online platform and collaborating with different stakeholders to provide access to additional educational resources. We would like to take the chance to thank HE Mr. Chris Rampling and DFID for facilitating the contact with CENTURY Tech who have been generous enough to provide us with free access to their English, Maths and Science educational resources. We are grateful for all the support we have received during this period and look forward to further collaboration with UK’s representation in Lebanon.”

 

British Ambassador to Lebanon, Chris Rampling, said:

Krystel Al-Akl, Head of Mathematics at Dhour Shweir Public Secondary School in Lebanon,

gaps of maths of students with very quick and effective feedback. Students are fully engaged

 

using the platform because it has a very wide variety of topics and exercises, which eliminates

 

their boredom.”

 

Building on the company’s work to help Syrian refugees in Lebanon, British technology social enterprise CENTURY Tech supported by the British Embassy Beirut, has partnered with MEHE and relevant Lebanese ministries, to help families across the country. Waiving the usual cost of hundreds of thousands of dollars, accessing CENTURY’s AI engine for free will allow Lebanese students to receive an education tailored to them as individuals, and continue to learn effectively during school closures.

 

CENTURY has been working closely with schools that have been forced to close as the coronavirus outbreak has spread across the world. Since February, hundreds of schools in countries from China to Nigeria to Lebanon have been using the platform to educate students from afar entirely for free.
