GCC Traffic Week activities continue

MUSCAT: The Royal Oman Police (ROP) continues with the activities of the GCC Traffic Week 2015, which comes under the theme ‘Your Decision Determines Your Fate’.

The Sultan Qaboos University (SQU), in cooperation with the ROP and a number of government institutions, yesterday organised a traffic seminar under the auspices of Salim bin Mohammed al Nu’aimi, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Transport and Communications for Transport.

Dr Mohammed Maliki, Dean of the College of Law, gave a speech highlighting the role of the SQU and the college, as well as its participation with the community in tackling the phenomena.

Assim Sa’ab, Head of the Seminar’s Organising Committee, gave a speech stressing the importance of the seminar, its programme and themes.

264517He pointed out that the seminar presents 16 working papers addressing some themes.

The two-day seminar includes four sessions touching on the legal status in facing traffic accidents and the responsibility resulting from traffic accidents among others.

A number of researchers and academics from inside and outside the Sultanate, the ROP, the Public Prosecution, the Ministry of Transport and Communications and a number of government agencies take part in presenting working papers during the seminar.

UK Education Expo to showcase wide array of academic options

MUSCAT: The UK Education Expo 2015 will be organised from March 23-24 at Muscat and March 25-26 at Salalah by Nimr Expo in association with Al Ahlam Higher Education Services. This was revealed yesterday at a press conference chaired by Said Amer al Rahbi, Director of Qualifications, Equivalence and Recognition at Ministry of Higher Education, Salim Omar al Hashmi, Chairman of Al Nimr Expo, Kate Clarke, Managing Director and Education Advisor at Al Ahlam Higher Education Services, and Muktar Mirza, Project Director at Al Nimr Expo.

Addressing the media, Al Rahbi said: “Higher Education and Training plays a vital role in Oman’s development and there has long been a strong relationship between the UK and Oman. UK has always been the most preferred destination for Omani students to pursue their Higher Education and enhance their English language skills.

“The Ministry has noticed a sharp increase in the enrolment of Omani students in British institutions by both scholarship as well as privately funded students. There are about 30,000 full scholarships inside and outside the Sultanate provided by the Ministry of Higher Education every year which covers around 90 per cent of the graduates. There are still some vacancies from the past year as we only accept student with grades above 65 per cent.”

Lola Lam, Commercial Attaché at UK Trade and Investment said “Omani students have been studying in the UK for many years and each year we welcome many more new students. The relations between the United Kingdom and Oman are strong and strategic and an increasing number of UK institutions now have programmes in affiliate colleges in Oman.”

The expo will attract over 2,000 visitors to explore education opportunities from over 30 institutions offering a number of academic options for the coming academic year.

Kate Clarke said: “UK is the number one destination for English language study and ranks second in the world for university education. The UK is a great place to study — whether it is for undergraduate, post-graduate, or language development. Excellent academic opportunities, great internships, a tolerant society and welcoming culture are few reasons an international student should consider study in the UK. For students who like a little extra travel, it is also a gateway to Europe.”

The expo in Muscat will be held at the InterContinental Muscat and will remain open for visitors from 4:30 pm to 9:00 pm; whereas the expo in Salalah will be held at the Hilton Salalah Resort and will be open from 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm.

Al Hashmi said: “The Expo team has worked extremely hard to plan and organise a variety of activities to ensure maximum exposure for the exhibitors participating at the exhibition. I would like to acknowledge our thanks and appreciation to UK Trade and Investment, British Embassy, the Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry — Dhofar Governorate for supporting this important event. This year we have also included the language schools to enable students strengthen their language during the summer vacation.”

The UK Education Expo enables students to collect information and make informed choices about career focused study programs.
