The Emir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah received today at the Emiri Diwan in Bayan Palace, Former Prime Minister Saad Hariri, in the presence of the Deputy Emir, Crown Prince Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, First Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Al-Khalid Al-Sabah, former MPs Bassem Sabeh and Ghattas Khoury and Hariri’s chief of staff Nader Hariri.
Afterwards a closed meeting was held between the Emir and Premier Hariri. Then Hariri told the press: “I had the honor of meeting with His Highness. We discussed several issues, particularly at the regional level, we agreed on the need to have a very good relationship with Iran, but its interferences are unacceptable. I explained to his Highness in details the initiatives in Lebanon to elect a president, the efforts that we are exerting in this context, and the importance of ending the vacancy because the economic and social situation is no longer tolerable.
He informed me of the assistance provided by Kuwait to Lebanon and its willingness to provide more assistance; Kuwait was by Lebanon’s side at all stages, and hopefully this relationship will remain for all of us an important, historic relationship linking the Kuwaiti and Lebanese peoples with affection and respect, and we always try to consecrate this affection. We are all discerning what is happening in the region and his Highness has a lot of wisdom, and we all have to be patient.”
Question: What is the importance of this visit in the framework of your trips abroad?
Hariri: My concern is for Lebanon to always stay on the map. It is true that we have a presidential vacancy, but this does not mean that Lebanon is absent. We hope that this vacancy will end soon but until that happens, we should let our brothers in the Gulf feel that the country needs them and that we respect the historical ties that bind us and seek to strengthen them.
Question: Did you sense a return of confidence in Lebanon and a possible return of the tourists?
Hariri: We Lebanese must elect a president. It is unacceptable that we are on the threshold of the third year of presidential vacancy. This problem was created by the Lebanese and they can solve it and we will work hard to elect a President.
At 1:15, Hariri visited the Kuwaiti National Assembly, where he was received by National Assembly Speaker Marzouk Al-Ghanim, in the presence of the Secretary General of the Kuwaiti National Assembly Allam Al-Kandari, the Assistant Secretary-General for Media and Public Relations Abdul Hakim Alsabti, former MPs Bassem Sabeh and Ghattas Khoury and Hariri’s chief of staff Nader Hariri.
The meeting focused on the relations between the two countries and developments in the region.
