Hassan mourns Sfeir: Believed in an independent Lebanon, established the constants of coexistence in difficult times

Druze Sheikh Aql Na’im Hassan mourned the passing away of Patriarch Nasrallah Sfeir on Sunday, expressing his “deep sorrow at the loss of Cardinal Mar Nasrallah Boutros Sfeir, whose lifetime marked Lebanon’s history.”

“He was a national, spiritual and sovereign pillar, who believed in an independent Lebanon. He established the principles of coexistence in difficult times and opened the page of the historical national reconciliation, a luminous juncture that cast away the wounds of the past and gave the real example of genuine national action,” said Hassan.

Eulogizing the late Patriarch in his statement, Sheikh Hassan added: “Lebanon will miss Patriarch Sfeir and his keenness on preserving the Muslim-Christian dialogue, his love and devotion, his tolerance, his openness and rejection of extremism.”

With the absence of Patriarch Sfeir, the Druze Sheikh Aql stressed “the need to build on what has been achieved in his era, and continued with Cardinal Beshara al-Rahi, in order to strengthen the foundation concepts of a unison nation for all citizens, and the notions of a just and independent state.”
