Jreij: Media outlets enjoy freedom, but should commit to law

Information Minister, Ramzi Jreij said that “the media outlets in Lebanon enjoy freedom, but should abide by law and should take into consideration the national interest.”

His remarks came during an Iftar held by Chairman of “Bank of Beirut” Salim Sfeir, at the Phoenicia Hotel in Beirut to honor the journalists and in the presence of Jreij.

Jreij said that media enjoyed a huge role in supporting the banking sector, particularly at the current critical stages in light of the issuance of the U.S. sanctions and after the blast which had rocked BLOM Bank.

The minister said that the media has the right to ask the support of the banking sector as result of the ongoing crisis.

“Newspapers are facing a serious problem and some companies might close. I have asked the Cabinet through a draft law to support financially the newspapers,” Jreij said.

He called on the banking sector to help the newspapers the same as the Central Bank helps those who want to buy apartments.
