MUSCAT: EFG Sailing Arabia — The Tour, EFG International Bank and Oman Sail invited 15 children from Child Care Centre in Al Khoudh, Muscat, to learn the basics of sailing as part of a commitment to the community and a vision to develop young talent.
243154Operating under the Ministry of Social Development, the Child Care Centre provides a family and community environment for orphaned children, including a library, nursery, access to school supplies and playgrounds to promote a wholesome upbringing for the children that covers personal, social, emotional and physiological development.
Run by a team of volunteers, the centre also ensures that the children receive their rights and benefits as ordained by the government and are able to attend school, have regular healthcare check ups and the opportunity to take part in fun, inspirational and educational events and activities outside of the centre.
Children from the centre visited Oman Sail headquarters at Almouj Marina to spend a fun day at sea and meet with Omani and international professional sailors taking part in the challenging offshore race.
Guided by Oman Sail’s coaches, the children took part in an introductory ‘Try Sailing’ lesson that provided them with basic knowledge of the sport before joining the race director and his team on the committee boat to watch the start of a practice race between all the competitors that are taking part in the 2015 edition of EFG Sailing Arabia — The Tour.

EFG Sailing Arabia — The Tour continues on Tuesday as the fleet makes its way from Sohar to Ras Al Khaimah, UAE. From there, the 11 teams will head to Dubai where they will take part in an inport race at the Dubai Offshore Sailing Club. The race then moves to Abu Dhabi and Doha for another inport race at the Four Seasons Marina before concluding in Manama, Bahrain. The 760nm course has been reversed by Oman Sail this year to provide a tougher challenge with strong head winds adding an extra tactical element that will test the competitors’ mettle.
