Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli on Thursday 26/5/2022 held a meeting with Supply and Internal Trade Minister Ali el Moselhi to follow up on the purchase of wheat from local farmers and the country’s strategic reserve of staples.
At the beginning of the meeting, the supply minister said that around 3 million tons of wheat has so far been received from local farmers, adding that the government would continue buying this strategic crop from farmers until reaching the target quantities.
Moselhi explained that the country’s stock of wheat is sufficient to meet its needs until January 2023, while the strategic reserves of rice can last it for nearly 6 months, cooking oil for roughly 6 months, livestock for around 16 months, frozen meat for approximately 6 months and frozen poultry for about 8 months.
The supply minister stated that the General Authority for Supply Commodities (GASC) contracted to purchase 50,000 tons of subsidized rice that are set to arrive in July and August of this year.
