RO 430 million set for electricity transmission

MUSCAT: Over RO 430 million will be spent in the electricity transmission and distribution this year, said Omar bin Khalfan al Wahibi, CEO of Electricity Holding Group. He was speaking at the second annual forum for companies operating in the electricity sector of contractors and suppliers. Hamad bin Salim al Maghdari, CEO, Rural Areas Electricity Company (RAEC) and Chairman of Distribution Code Review Panel (DCRP), said that the forum aims at exchanging ideas and opinions and highlighting the challenges that might face the companies while carrying out projects.

He said DCRP will discuss a mechanism to develop work in the electricity sector, how to assign tenders for the 47 small and medium companies (SMEs) that are capable technically in the implementation of projects and have been approved by DCRP, and the introduction of the laws and standards applied in the registering of companies operating in the sector, in addition to informing suppliers of equipment used and approved in the electricity distribution companies.

263892DCRP is the entity authorised by the electricity distribution companies and Electricity Regulation Authority to review and discuss the development of the distribution codes of the electrical system in the Sultanate with lower voltage of 132 kv to make sure that the terms of the distribution code is constantly working in favour of the distribution companies and the users of the network.

Al Wahaibi spoke about the importance of such meetings of the electricity sector companies to share experiences and views on very important matters relating to the areas of electric power, explore the needs in different fields of generation, transmission and distribution of electricity, listen to the challenges that companies may face in implementing their projects and search for necessary solutions and treatments, to ensure sustainability of power supply.

He urged contractors to focus on training Omanis as electricians and technicians, apart from trying to minimise fatalities while on the job. Al Maghdari said that DCRP has approved 70 companies operating in the electricity sector during 2014, and approved 16 companies since the beginning of this year until February, so the total number of companies approved by DCRP became 203 companies of contractors and suppliers.

It may be noted worth mentioning that the Distribution Code Review Panel is an entity operating under the Law regulating and allocating the electricity sector and its related water issued by Royal Decree No 78/2004, Article 90.

DCRP lists electricity distribution companies including Muscat Electricity Distribution Company, Rural Areas Electricity Company, Mazoon Electricity Company, Majan Electricity Company and Dhofar power Company.
