Sudan’s Interior Minister, Police General Dr. Hamid Mohamed Manan met the visiting United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Filippo Grandi, here Wednesday.

Also present were the State Minister for Interior, Babiker Ahmed al-Amin Digna’a, the UNHCR Representative in Sudan Noriko Yoshida, and Sudanese Commissioner for Refugee Affairs Hamad al-Juzouli.

The two sides reviewed Sudan’s efforts in hosting refugees and the asylum seekers from neighboring countries, and its role in preparing appropriate conditions for their living conditions by providing security, shelter and assistance in health and education, despite the weak regional and international support provided to Sudan to meet the needs of the refugees.

The High Commissioner praised the Sudanese people and government for their efforts in receiving and hosting the refugees from different neighbouring countries for long periods.

He added that his visit to Sudan was to enable him to see first-hand the situation surrounding the refugees, especially the refugees from South Sudan who have come to seek refuge in Sudan following the violence which broke out in South Sudan.

He indicated that following his visit and though co-ordination with the relevant authorities, the UNHCR would draw up long-term plans to tackle the various issues and problems concerning the refugees, including solutions to overcome the problem of financing the cost of hosting the refugees in this country.

This would include measures through which financing could be attracted from donor countries and relevant organizations and would also include assistance and support for police forces to properly perform their role to ensure stability and security of the refugees in the camps.
