Sultanate condemns execution of Egyptians

MUSCAT: The Sultanate yesterday condemned the execution of a group of Egyptian nationals in Libyan territory by fighters belonging to the IS group. “The Sultanate of Oman receives with utmost concern the news about the execution of 21 Egyptian citizens by the IS. While it condemns this criminal and heinous act, which reflects deep hatred and organised terrorism that contradicts with all religions and sanctity of human soul, it reaffirms the importance of collaboration of efforts of international community to combat terrorism and eradicate its sources.”

It also expresses its solidarity with the government of Egypt and the families of the victims.

Meanwhile, Egyptian jets bombed IS targets in Libya yesterday, drawing Cairo directly into the conflict across its border.

Egypt said the pre-dawn strike hit militant camps, training sites and weapons storage areas in neighbouring Libya`, where civil conflict has plunged the country into near anarchy.

“And let those near and far know that the Egyptians have a shield that protects and preserves the security of the country, and a sword that eradicates terrorism,” the military said.

Egyptian state television aired footage of fighter planes leaving a hangar with “Long live Egypt” emblazoned on the tails, followed by night-vision aerial footage showing bomb explosions and the aircraft returning in early daylight.
