The Swedish government announced in a statement on Monday a decision to open an embassy in Beirut that would have absolute and comprehensive authority by the year’s end.
Sweden’s embassy in Syria used to include within its authority Lebanese territories in the past.
This issue had been discussed between Sweden’s Foreign Minister, Margot Wallstr?mm, and her Lebanese counterpart Gibran Bassil during a meeting last June.
The embassy’s activities would focus on covering political developments and bolstering bilateral ties, in a manner that allowed favorable terms to keep up with the Syrian crisis and its repercussions on both Lebanon and Sweden.
This included monitoring Sweden’s aid strategy for Syria, which allocated a sum of 212 million USD in a five-year-plan.
