Written question – VP/HR — Gulf Cooperation Council countries – E-011071/2015

In 1988 the European Union and the Cooperation Council for the Gulf States (GCC) signed an economic cooperation agreement that laid the foundations and set the framework for a bilateral FTA between the two regional blocs. Negotiations resumed in 2002 with a broader mandate including services and investment.

Most of the countries that form part of the GCC — Saudi Arabia, Oman, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Kuwait — commit systematic violations of human rights.

What does the EU intend to do to guarantee fundamental rights in countries with which it has close political and economic ties?
